*How often should I have my chimney cleaned/inspected?

   In general, a wood burning fireplace needs cleaning after 1-1 1/2 cords of     wood burned.  This is a very broad/general rule, as many factors influence how efficiently your wood is burned, regardless of how much wood is burned.
   Although gas is generally a clean burning fuel, the chimney can become non-functional from bird nests or other debris blocking the flue.  Cleaning will not likely be necessary every year, but annual inspection is recommended.
    According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances.  Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary."

*How long does a chimney cleaning take?

    * Prefab fireplaces: 20 - 35
    * Masonry Fireplace: 30 - 45 min
    * Inserts: 60 - 90 min
    * Free-standing wood stove:  45 - 60 min

*My fireplace smokes.  What can I do?

    There are a multitude of reasons for smokey fireplaces.  Our link to the CSIA website has an entire secion on smoking fireplaces.

*What type of firewood should I use?

*Is it ok to burn artificial logs with Duraflame and the Chimney Sweeping Log?

    Convenience is their strong suit and in general they are fine when time is an issue and you want a quick fire without all the mess of natural firewood.  They should be burned only one at a time and only in an open fireplace.  Be sure to carefully read the directions on the package.

*How do I remove stains from my fireplace front or mantle:

    Removing black soot stains from brick or stone fireplace fronts can be a messy process indoors.  Mix and apply the following solution, scrubbing with a steel wire brush:

    * 1 gallon warm water
    * 1 cup dishhwashing liquid
    * 1 T distilled white vinegar

*Why do I need a chimney cap on my chimney?

    * To keep out birds and animals.  We've pulled everything from squirels to tennis balls and snakes out of flues.
    * To keep out rain which leads to moisture damage and expensive repairs.
