 * A full chimney service company * Fully insured and certified * Family owned and operated since 1989 * Member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild * CSIA Certification #2192 * Servicing San Antonio and surrounding counties * Fast, clean, courteous service Have soot, will travel The black top hat and tails are a tradition of the trade for a chimney sweep - one that Bob Burney honors some of the time to please the customers. But most of the year, the Aggie Chimney Sweep's uniform of choice is a maroon sport shirt with the Aggies "gig 'em" logo.
I started my chimney sweeping business in 1989 after 17 years in construction-related jobs. I was an estimator for a variety of contractors and subcontractors. After my sixth job change in two years - a phenomenon attributed to tough economic times in San Antonio and Texas - a magazine advertisement caught my eye. The ad told a tale of making big bucks sweeping chimneys part-time.
Now, 20 years later, my part-time job has become an all-consuming full-time thriving business. The name of my company, Aggie Chimney Sweep, was chosen, in part, because of the powerful networking of the Texas A&M University (Aggies) crowd, of which there are many in San Antonio. I'm proud to be a graduate of Texas A&M Class of '68. My degree is in Marketing. My grandfather, my father, myself, and my two daughters are all graduates of Texas A&M. We completed 100 years at A&M with the graduation of my youngest daughter in 2006.
"He has good morals," says Bob Hart, referring to Burney. Hart is a long-time Houston chimney sweep and an acquaintance of Burney. These morals sometimes keep Burney from accepting certain jobs. If he feels that certain work needs to be performed on a chimney to keep a fire or further damge from occurring, he'll turn down the job if the homeowner won't let him do all the work. I'm either going to do it all, or I'm not going to do any of it. A lot of chimney sweeps don't understand when they get into the business the liability they face.
According to Sue Fine, editor of Sweeping magazine, a monthly publication of the Baltimore, Md. - based National Chimney Sweep Guild, there are about 6,000 - 8,000 people who have purchased the primary equipment needed for chimney sweepng in the U.S. Only 1,100 have a certification from the voluntary guild school Chimney Safety Institute of America.
